I paint to share “That which exists between me and the object, ” to quote modernist painter Marsden Hartley. I have been inspired by myths, fairy tales, and folktales from all over the world, and after I painted my first mythical animal from the “Raven Steals the Sun” myth in 2005, I’ve wanted to continue to interpret my vision of these ancient stories.

The sensual joy I get while painting — the electricity galloping along my nerves when two colors come together at the edges, feeling the slick, creamy stroke humming through the brush, the tips whispering across the sharkskin canvas, solving the puzzle of my visions — leads me to this final reward of sharing my solution with other people.
