2011 Clover Pass Community Church Singing Christmas Tree

It is the 30th year for Ketchikan Alaska to receive the gift of the annual presentation of the celebrated tradition, The Clover Pass Church Singing Christmas Tree. Over the past 30 years nearly 1,000 community members have been involved with the production of the singing tree. Not only does the tree usually contain 40 to 50 adult singers the children’s choir adds another 15 to 20 voices plus the man and woman power that goes into the creation of the set design, construction, erection of the tree, table decorations, lighting, sound as well as food and drinks. All six presentations are FREE of charge.

This year’s theme is: He Is The One, Do You Know Him? The setting is Kethikan’s own Creek Street and it takes you back in time historically through the recreation of the boardwalk neighborhood so familiar to Ketchikan residents and visitors alike. You’ll recognize the steel bridge and the fronts of familiar historical buildings. The smell of salty sea air and spawning salmon is pleasantly replaced by the aroma of fresh baked cookies & scones, hot cider and fresh brewed caffelattes, all FREE of charge.

Totally new this year is a program that features traditional Christmas carols sung mostly a’ccapella in original 4 part harmony. Director Rob Holston will be conducting time tested classics such as, O Little Town of Bethlehem, written in 1868; the 1871 version of a much older carol, The Fist Nowell and the 1840 Felix Mendelssohn version of a 1739 carol known as Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. The Children’s Choir is under the direction of Jodi Albertson. The narration is written by Bob Landis and the set designer and technical director is Mike Cooke.

The program will take place in the Clover Pass Church sanctuary with the audience seated comfortably around tables in an informal family fashion with cookies and hot cider delivered to your table. Scones and caffelattes will be available in the Little Red Church before and after each performance where you can walk down memory lane by viewing old photographs of singing trees from many of the years past.

The church campus if located at the corner of North Tongass Highway and North Point Higgins Road. Two performances are Friday evening, December 9th at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM. One performance is scheduled for Saturday evening, December 10th at 7:00 PM. and two matinee performances are scheduled for Sunday afternoon, December 11th at 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM. The adult choir will also present the program to the inmates of the Ketchikan Correctional Facility the following Saturday evening. Each performance is about one hour in length. Tickets are available from Clover Pass Church members, choir members, Heavenly Creations, Island Tile and Marble and McPherson’s Music. Free will donations can be made after the performance.
